Be the Cause... of more effective Help and Hope

It is time for us to be the cause...

To be the cause of more effective Help and Hope in the world.

We have the ability to be the cause of great changes in the world right now. With all of the innovation, creativity, ingenuity, and resources in the developed world - we are ready to make a great impact on the lives of those living in poverty.

We can be the cause of more effective help through the way that we upgrade humanitarian aid.

We can be the cause of more effective Hope in the world through the way that we tailor our message to bring opportunity, love, and grace to a world in need.

And you can do this.

You can do this.

You can be the cause... of more effective help and Hope in the world today.

Be the Cause... of a Shift of Thought.

Be the Cause. Be the Cause. Be the Cause.

Of a shift of thought.

A change of mindset.

A revolution of strategy.

You have the opportunity to help make the world a better place. One of the ways that you can do that is by changing your own thinking about the way that we help people - and then being the cause of a change of thinking in the people around you. Right now we are a step slow and a foot short in being able to help those living in extreme poverty. But we have the ability to improve. We have the ability to update. We have the ability to increase.

We just have to change our thinking.

We have been doing humanitarian aid the same way for way too many years. If any for-profit business in the world did not update their practices throughout the years, then they would go out of business. But the nonprofits and government agencies that operate humanitarian aid for those struggling around the world have lived too comfortably in their outdated, slow, and ineffective operations. We have to change the way that we do things. And in order to do that, we have to have a shift of thought.

We need to develop a mindset of innovation. There is so much innovation in America. Take a look at technology. Everything that we have is constantly updating and changing. From 8tracks to cassettes to walkmans to cd players to ipods to better ipods and better ipods and better ipods. It seems like nothing stays the same for more than a few days! But humanitarian aid has not had these same innovations. It is the same old stuff, and it is yielding the same old results.

And these results are not cutting it.

We have to change our mindset. We need to develop a mindset of innovation with the way that we do things. We need to find better, faster, and more effective ways to help people. We have to get better at these things. We have to because we can and because we need to so that more people can be helped.

So you can be a part of this. You can be the cause of a shift of thought for the way that we do humanitarian aid. It is time. It is needed. It is the future.

Be the cause... of a shift of thought.

Be the Cause... of change in this world.

Be the cause... Be the cause... Be the cause...

We have already talked about one way to look at this phrase. This phrase can teach us a mindset of solidarity with people who are suffering around the world. It can help us to see that there is a level of aid that goes beyond simply giving money or wearing a t-shirt. There is a level of solidarity that is so deep and real and compassionate that you truly become the cause that you are supporting. And that is where I hope we can all be one day with the social justice issues that are going on around the world. We need to go beyond helping with the cause - and we need to learn how to be the cause. Solidarity. Experience. Compassion. Be the cause.

And here is the beautiful part. When we start to do this, then we can start to be the cause of change in this world. We can be the cause of solutions. We can be the cause of help and Hope. We can be the cause of something good happening for people who have nothing and have no one.

Through real compassion, solid solidarity, and innovative aid - we can be the cause of change in this world. We can be the cause of good things. We can be the cause of the end of some of these long-standing social justice and humanitarian problems in the developing world.

So let's start to realize that the more that we be the cause - experiencing solidarity with those suffering - the more we will be the cause of change in the world.

Be the cause... in order to be the cause...

An Example of Innovation: The Grain Miracle

Because International (the name of the parent organization for this blog) is focused on providing innovations for people living in extreme poverty. So much of the developed world has constant innovations to do things faster, better, and more effectively. Yet the majority of those living in extreme poverty in the developing world are still receiving aid and help in very rudimentary ways. We need to focus on innovating unique and practical solutions and updates for the way that we try to help those in need around the world.

One man who found a unique and practical innovation that has changed the lives of countless millions of sustenance farmers in developing nations is Dr. Norman Borlaug. You might not have heard of him before, but he won the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on the "Grain Miracle".

Basically, the African and Indian and many other farmers in developing countries were having trouble growing a more full and hearty grain. The ability was there for the meat of the grain to be bigger, but that led to a problem. When the grain kernels were large (which would be great because that would lead to a bigger crop), the stalk would become too weak to support it. The entire thing would break off and fall dead to the ground. So farmers were stuck with the normal amount of grain year after year - or even smaller amounts in a drought year.

But then Dr. Borlaug discovered a way to make the stalk fatter and wider. He had created a series of remarkably successful high-yield, disease-resistant, semi-dwarf wheat. This wheat was shorter and wider and stuck closer to the ground. This allowed it to not fall over with a larger amount of kernels. It was a revolution for many sustenance farmer around the world.

These are the innovations that we need. These are the solutions that we seek. This is the mindse that we need to implement again. With all of the technology in the world, with all of the communication, with all of the ability that we have - we need to use it to do good. We need to use it for them. We need to innovation for them.

How to Innovate for Them

So how can we innovate for them?

What is the plan? How do we do that?

In my estimation, there are four distinct parts.

1) Identify the Problem.
What is the specific problem that we are talking about? In order to begin to innovate, we need to define a specific problem that we want to help. Malaria, AIDS, clean water - whatever it is it must be specified and defined. We cannot fix everything with one innovation. We must identify which problem we want to work with and then go from there.

2) Identify Current Operations.
What are we currently doing to fight against this problem? What current steps are we taking to solve this? What is happening right now? In order to innovate and improve upon something, we need to identify the things that are currently going on to fight against the specific problem.

3) Identify the Lack.
How can these current operations be better? Where do they lack? Where are they not meeting the mark? Obviously, since our problems are not going away and people are still struggling, we can do things better. This is a very important step to identify where the current operations are lacking.

4) Innovate Solutions.
Once it is identified where the current operations are lacking, then that is the place where we need to make innovative solutions. We have to use our resources, our experiences, our minds, and inspiration from the Lord to develop innovations in these situations.

This is the pattern. Now we just have to do it.

Here we go.

A Good Example of the Concept

Recently, I was watching an episode from the final season of The West Wing. (p.s. This is such a good show - probably pretty underrated as far as good television shows in the last 25 years. But I digress...). There was a situation in the episode that corresponded really well to what Because is all about.

In the episode, there is a very high-ranking official named CJ Kregg. The administration was nearing an end, and CJ was going to need to find a new job pretty soon. She had a plethera of offers, but one offer was almost impossible to turn down (even though she did ultimately turn it down). A multi-billionare came to her with a job offer. He was a man who had already made his fortune, and now he wanted to leave a legacy by doing something good for the world. He presented CJ with this offer. He would give her 10 billion dollars to solve a social justice problem in the world. No strings attached. Here are the resources. Get out there and get it done.

This is the exact concept of Because...

Wouldn't it be a joy if someone would do this? Wouldn't it be such a blessing if this could happen? America, North America, and the developing countries have so much money and wealth - that this type of situation is possible. There are dozens of billionaires in the world. There are thousands of multi-millionaires in the world. There are people who have great resources and good hearts.

There are also people who are extremely smart. There are people who understand the world, understand what the world needs, and understand how to fix these problems. The problems in the world are large, but they are not invincible. There are answers to these questions, and there are solutions to these problems. We have the ability to solve these problems, and we have the people that can do it.

We can do things like this. We can do this.

What if we did something like this? There are smart people in the world. There are rich people in the world. And there is great need in the world. Because is focused on this type of concept. We want to end these problems by providing the appropriate resources that they need in order to eliminate them.

Hopefully one day Because can institute this situation - and we can end some of these problems.

And because its the right thing to do.

Why should we Be the Cause for people suffering in the world?

Because its the right thing to do.

There are some things that we need to do simply because it is the right thing. It may not be the smartest thing. It may not be the most comfortable thing. It certainly isn't the easiest thing. But it is the right thing.

Doing the right thing is our God-given mandate. It is one of the highest callings of humankind. It is what all of our movies are about. It is what the heroes do. It is the hope of every good man and woman. And it is one of the reasons why we should Be the Cause for people suffering from social injustices around the world.

What is the right thing to do? If someone is starving - give him something to eat. If someone is thirsty - give her clean water to drink. If someone is naked - give them clothes. If someone is being abused - rescue them. If someone is being mistreated - stand up for them. These things are right and good.

But we often turn a blind eye and a deaf ear because of excuses that we conjure up. We say think that just because these things are happening on the other side of the world that we don't need to do anything. We think that because we need our money here to pay for this luxury and that luxury that we don't have enough to help them. We think that they will always be like that so there is nothing that we can really do. We make up every excuse in the book for why those of us who can help should not help them.

But every excuse falls short of the truth: it is the right thing to do.

No matter how much it hurts, how hard it is, or how effective - we must be the cause for those living in extreme poverty around the world because it is the right thing to do.

Never let anyone tell you different. Deep in your heart of hearts you know it is true.

Why should we be the cause for those suffering around the world?

Because it is the right thing to do.

Be the Cause.... for who? for what?

Here are some important initial questions to ask when we consider how we fit into a Because world. As we consider our concept to "be the cause" for people - we need to ask some good questions.

First, be the cause... for who?

Is anyone being ignored? Cast aside? Marginalized?

Is anyone being unfairly treated or oppressed?

Is there anyone who does not have a voice? Needs help standing up? Who doesn't have anyone else at all?

Second, be the cause... for what?

What are the most pressing issues that face people today?

What are the issues that affect the most people?

What are the issues that are the most serious - the literal life or death issues?

What are the issues that can change? The issues that are ready for change? The issues that absolutely need to change?

Ask yourself these questions. Let's start here.

Because They Need It

Why should we help people? Because they need it.

This is probably the most underrated reason, but it is the most important. We should be the cause for people – we should help people simply because they need help. That is human dignity. That is Christian service. That is world community. It is the right and decent thing to do. It is the first thing we should do. It is the last thing we should give up doing. We need to help people simply because they need it.

In this specific case, people living in extreme poverty around the world really need help. It is not like they are living in middle class wealth and could use some more health insurance or a car for their teenager. No. They intensely need help. They are dying. They are dying everyday. They are living in hunger, disease, and fear. They have no future, no opportunities, and no chances. They need help.

Their situation is dire. The need is great. The hour is now.

Why should we help them? Why should we partake in solidarity with them by being the cause? Because they need it.

Why? Because We Can.

Why? Why should we ‘be the cause’? Why should we help people? Because we can.

Spiderman’s Uncle told him once “With great power comes great responsibility”. Those of us living in developed countries have been blessed with wealth – money, food, power, and resources. God has allowed us the opportunity to succeed and flourish, and many of us have done so. But this great wealth comes with a great responsibility.

I always here people ask, “Why should we help them – those suffering from AIDS, malaria, unclean water, civil wars, etc. Why should we help them?” We should help them simply for this fact alone: because we can. Don’t you think that Kenya would love to help their African neighbor Rwanda? Don’t you think that Guatemala would love to help out Nicaragua? If these other countries had the ability, I believe they would help out in an instant. They know the need because they have experienced it firsthand. The only reason they cannot give more is because they do not have more. But we do. We can.

We have been given such resources here in developed countries and with it comes the responsibility to help those less fortunate than ourselves. If we do not help, who will? Who will feed the hungry if not the people with the food? Who will buy the medicines if not the people with the money? Who will rebuild if not the builders with the resources?

It is our responsibility to act – because we have the power to act. We have the resources to act. We have the responsibility to act. Simply because we can act.

So why should we help them? Because we can.

Be The Cause

Be the cause.

Be the cause.

Be the cause.

What does this mean? What in the world does this mean? This is actually the way that we should seek to be involved with the issues of social justice going on in the world. This is the spirit that we should have about the social ills in the world community. This is the way that we need to support those suffering in the world. We need to not only help these causes - we need to be the cause.

Being the cause is so much more than the normal financial support and two hours once a month on the weekends. It is more than kind of knowing what is going on with the people in that one African country. Being the cause is immersing yourself in the problems, injustices, and suffering of people around the world. Being the cause is experiencing solidarity with people who are living in the conditions of extreme poverty - realizing their plight, supporting them in realistic and meaningful ways, and living out your life without forgetting theirs.

We've got to do better. For them.

Up the anty. Experience solidarity. Be the cause.

Innovation...for them.

Why is it that most of the innovation that takes place in the world happens in developed countries? Well, I think I know the answer to that. The developed countries have all of the innovators. They have all of the educated people. They have all of the money. They have all of the physical resources. They have all of the things that need constant innovation (computers, technology, etc.). They innovate because they have to in order to survive in this global competition.

Ok. I understand that.

But why is it that most of the innovation that takes place in the world happens for developed countries, too? And, I know, I know. Really, I do. Competition. Bigger and better. Smaller and faster. Money, survival, opportunity. Money, again. I know. I really know. But, aren't these developed countries innovated enough?

Honestly, I am not saying that all innovation needs to stop in America or anything. I know what drives the world. But I also know this: there is not enough innovation going on for those living in developing countries. There is not enough innovation going on for those whose daily life skills, tools, and resources have not changed in years. There is not enough innovation going on for the biggest problems facing our world today. And it needs to change. Now.

We need innovation for them. We need innovation for the farmer who can't grow crops when there is a drought. We need innovation for the mother who has to walk 4 miles everyday to get water. We need innovation for the children who have to cook in an old clay oven. We need innovation for the poor who cannot afford to get the nutrients and vitamins their body needs. We need innovation for them, the least, the lower - for those who cannot innovate for themselves. That's what we need.

Oh, what is that? We already have that stuff? Well, then, why aren't these problems going away? If we already have these things, then we need to innovate a way to make it all work. We need to innovate better logistics and strategies to get it to them. We need to innovate better training to make the resources a part of their daily lives.

Basically, we need to innovate. We need to dedicate our mental capabilities, expansive resources, and prioritized money to them and their needs.

We need to give them our best.

We need to innovate...for them.

Be the Cause.

There are so many issues and causes in the world. Starvation. Child soldiering. HIV/AIDS. Malaria. Poverty. So many others. There are so many others. There are so many, many others. But what can we do?

We can be the cause. Be the cause. Take on the ownership of a certain cause. Experience solidarity with a specific issue. Know. Understand. Realize. Live in another person’s shoes. Go through what someone else has to go through. Immerse yourself so much in an issue and a cause that you take it so much upon yourself that you actually become the cause. Be the cause. Be the cause.

Why?

Because.

Because you can.

Because they need you.

Because it’s the right thing to do.
